UPDATE!

On my way home from Jury duty, I figured out what to do with your upcoming assessment. I think I'm being nice for doing this, but I'm sure someone is not going to like it...

Anyhow... Wednesday, you're going to have a MAJOR QUIZ, NOT a TEST! As you know, I've marked the mini quizzes you guys wrote, and I'm not too happy with the overall results. Some of you did well.. others of you did okay, but I think a third of the class needs more help.

So... on Wednesday, you're going to have a quiz on Polynomials (the whole of chapter 6). And after we do chapter 7, we are going to have a TEST on chapter 3, 6 and 7 at once.

That means, you don't have to review chapter 3 just yet! I really need you to focus on Chapter 6s review questions.

Please tell the class/supply teacher what I said... Print a copy out if you think the supply won't believe you.

Expect the quiz to take anywhere from 30 - 50 minutes. And it will include application, communication and thinking questions.

Study hard and I'll be online to help you if you need me... I could be gone for the whole entire week! :(

For those of you celebrating holidays.... happy holiday... (someone explain to me the difference between Dhawali and Eid.... I'm confused)

Ladies and Gents,

I'm bored to death, sitting here in the Jury Lounge. I don't think I'll be back in school until maybe Friday. That's what the Jury Staff told me. The test is still happening on Wednesday, but I am thinking of having a two part test. When I marked your quizzes, many of you didn't do as well as I wanted you to. That means that I might have 2 tests for you and mark the best of the 2. I haven't decided yet, but I don't want to test you on something that you haven't learned properly. And yet, some of you have grasped this topic soo well that there's no point to dragging the test on for another week.

Um.. I'm trying to publish the marks on my site. Blogger doesn't allow for posts... stay tuned for a link to get the marks.. The internet connection down here sucks... so I'm not going to do it at the court house.

Study Study!

Last week passed so quickly. I didn't even realized that I haven't updated the blog for one whole week. Oops!

Luckily I see all of you everyday and you have learnt to help each other out. Next week (or at least Monday), this will be the only place where I'll be able to communicate with you! Tell me what happens in class and how the supply teacher was.

I trust that you will be on your best behaviour and lots of studying will be happening. The test is on Wednesday and it will cover both chapter 3 and chapter 6s material.

The tiny quiz that we did today in class will be marked over the weekend. I will try to post your marks here and the full solutions to the quiz will be up online on Monday night or so. I'll try to get online often on Monday to answer your questions.

The next chapter

I hope you all did well on the quiz/test today. I'm going to have a lot of fun marking them... NOT!

As you've read on the board, we are plowing straight ahead into polynomials. Most of you will find the beginning of that chapter very easy. Be warned though, you can't slack. The basics need to be learned well so that you'll be fine in the later parts of the chapter.

The homework assigned was p. 300 - 301, # 1 - 56 EO, 57 EO part, 58 EO part!!

No Posts!

I think the biggest reason why the blog is less popular is that I haven't been posting. I just got home from night school... drinking my soup at the moment.

Life has been really busy since I took up that extra job, and I still haven't caught up with everything.

Tomorrow, we will be doing a bit of review. And if I have time, some sort of extention/TIPs questions. And I'm thinking of something else too.. but I won't tell you yet.

Tonight's homework is the square roots section and if you haven't already. Start working on the review. I can't tell you what's on the quiz on Friday, because it hasn't been written yet. I'll update you on the blog Thursday night.

Anyhow... I do want to remind those receipents of the yellow slips to inform your parents and come promptly to my room. I just found out today that Counting On You will be using my room after school, so we will have to move to maybe Room 208 for the extra help.

Fractions!

Today (yesterday) we learnt about multiplying and dividing rational numbers. Most of you have already learnt it in earlier grades and this is simply just a review.

The homework assigned was page 128 # 1 -28 EO and I think # 29 - 32. AND page 132 # 1 - 36 and # 38 - 42. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The lesson is on my desk in room 206 so I'm just recalling from my memory.

Thursday night is grade 9 curriculum night. Please once again encourage your parents to come. The event starts at 7:00 in the cafeteria. Even if you have to be late, I highly suggest that you and your parents attend. The school loves parental involvement in your education and I would love to see them.

I'm being lazy

As you can see I haven't been updating the blog recently. Most of you know about the big news over the weekend, and I am sick too .... It doesn't leave too much time and energy to tell you what is happening.

Speaking of which, what is happening?
Today we took up the test and then the scientific notation homework. Don't be alarmed if someone made a mistake on your paper... I'll be going through them all again and making sure that everything is correct. Tomorrow we will be carrying on with rational numbers. We will be doing fractions for a while, so brace yourself.

Exhausted!

I won't be updating as frequently for the next little while. Things have begun to get busy, and my schedule is packed pretty tightly.

Today we learned about Scientific Notation and Negative and Zero Exponents. Tomorrow we will learn a little bit about Scientific Notation for small numbers. The homework I assigned for today does not need to be done until Monday. I will start checking again soon!!

I also have not had the chance to call you parents, but I assure you that I will before the parent/teacher night on the 5th. Please kindly remind them for me! I'd love to meet them all.

Oh... as for extra help. The homework connection runs every Wednesday from 3:00 - 4:00 in the Credit Resource Centre (opposite to the library). I'll be there every Wednesday to help with homework from any subject. Other teachers will be there too... so you can get lots of help. Do remember I'm available to help you during my lunches and after school still. Make good use of the resources available to you.

Tomorrow is Terry Fox day, please remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket if you're going to be cold. Night night!!

The day before tomorrow

This is it! I've photocopied the tests. I've tallied the test up; it's 5 pages long and 94 marks!
Do-able right? Right!! If you have studied hard, you should have no problems with the test. Remember, there's both the review packaged (2 pages double-sided) and the review sections of the textbook (p. 44 - 46 & p. 92 - 94) that you can work on.

If you think you know how to do most things, I still need you to practice doing the problem solving questions. I'll check the blog tonight at around 11 or so, before I go to bed for last minute questions.

NO AFTERSCHOOL

People, I'm sorry, but I totally forgot that Monday is a shorten day when I said I would do afterschool help.

I have meetings until 2:45 or so on Monday, after the dismissal, so the only extra help I can give is during 2nd and 4th period.

Thank you for carrying on with the comment posts in such a mature matter. And, no, I do not mind having science questions posted. ;D

I don't want to have to say what I said in class today ever again, because I have faith in your ability to be responsible for your words and your actions. Make me proud please.

Today's activity was weird, I do agree. It's the first time I've done something like this with grade 9s.. I've done it before with grade 11s but I think you guys were working a bit harder than they would. The mark you get on this activity will be counted as your thinking inquiry and problem solving mark for this unit. And the mark will be derived from both your group's answers on the page, your peer evaluations and your self evaluations. So you need to work hard and well as a group to do well here.

I've had a look at your work and I'm very pleased so far. We will not continue the activity next class, nor will we continue it on Tuesday. We are going to work on the activity on Wednesday, the day after our test.

Monday is a review day, and Tuesday will be a full period test. Please take the time this weekend to do review. If you are done the review package then go back and find questions in the sections we have done and work on those. The more practice you get the better it is for you. Even if you understand everything, practice makes perfect and working on your speed and form is really important as well.

We don't have class tomorrow, so please remember to bring your math textbook home. If you need me for extra help, I'm available 2nd and 4th and afterschool tomorrow. I will definitely be giving extra help Monday afterschool so make the effort to come in even for a question or two.

I hope you all learned something from the grade 9 orientation session. I know I did... I've got powerful blue thinking sheets in my draw now!

Anyways, I think we are going to be doing some group work tomorrow. Be prepared for something different.

You won't be assigned homework, but you still have a lot of homework from last day and the big review package to do! Study hard for your test!

Extra Help Times

Second period: If I don't have to supply for another teacher, I will be in room 206 for the first 20 minutes of that period.

Fourth Period: If you need my assistance tell me a period ahead of time, and I'll make arrangements to meet you in room 208 for up to half of the period. Most likely I'll meet you near the end of the period.

Afterschool: I'll be in room 206 for at least 10 minutes, and I can stay for quite a while. If I'm not in 206, then find me in the math office and we can work in 206, after you get me!

Lime Green BLAH!

We learnt some applications of percentages today, section 2.8 in your textbook. For homework, you are to do pages 82 - 83 # 1 - 55 every other question. I also gave you a review package that you SHOULD do.

We do not have class tomorrow. You are to go to your grade 9 orientation session. Please get to your location on time; It is really hard on the teacher running your session, otherwise.

Lime Green people, I found out that you are to do your AEP workshop during the 1st session. Meet in the library and someone will come and find you!

Grade 9 Orientation -> No math class on Wednesday

I hope the homework was managable. You were assigned p. 73 and p. 77 every other question. I meant to say # 1- 77 though on p. 77. Oh well, you'll just be asked to do them tomorrow for homework.

Today we talked about percents and how they are used in our daily lives. We will go into more specific details tomorrow. Because you will not be having math class on Wednesday, I'll also be giving you a review package to you in class tomorrow. There are a lot of questions there and I will not specify which ones to do. Just do as many as you think is necessary for you to prepare for the test.

When's the test again? YUP!! Tuesday, September the 26th. Remember to write that in your agenda if you haven't already. Do also remember that I'm available for extra help during periods 2, 4 and afterschool. Don't hesitate to come see me, even if it's only for 10 minutes.

Next Test! September 26

Today we learned about rates and unit rates and you got assigned even more homework! ;P

I also announced the test date to be Tuesday September 26. This test might take the whole period, although I don't know for sure cause I haven't really made it up yet.

I'm almost done calling everyone in the other class. There's only about 5 people left on the list. So I'll start calling the parents in your class on Monday. Give them a heads up so you won't get in trouble. Remember I'm calling everyone, not just you.

We will be doing percents on Monday! Bring your calculator.. you'll be needing it!

Ratios!

Wow did I give you a lot of homework or what? Actually I don't think it's that bad. Most people were on page 63 by the end of the period anyways. Just to recap, the homework is p. 54 - 55 # 1 - 5 (every other one), #7 (every other one), #9, #10 a, c, # 11, 12, 13 AND p. 63 # 1 - 29 (every other one), # 31, 32, 35, 36 and 38.

We will start the lesson tomorrow with equivalent ratios and how to solve proportions and move on to Rates and Unit Pricing. We might also make it to Percent as well. We are going quickly so you'll have to work extra hard.

Please remember to tell your parents your mark from the quiz. I will be calling, in fact I have already started calling the other class.

This is the first time your post is significantly different from the other class' post.

I finished marking your quizzes. Although there were NO perfect marks, the marks that I have for this class was MUCH higher than the other class'. I'm proud of you. You wonm't like your marks, cause I think you think you can do better, but we are off to a decent start.

Yes Saad, we are going to continue learning about ratios tomorrow and possibly go into percentages. You've had 2 days without homework, it's time to get going again.

NOW, those of you who didn't pass the quiz, please make an effort to come speak to me in private during lunch (period 4) or after school for about 5 minutes. I need to know what you think and how I can make the class better for you.

Quiz 1

Hi all!
I'm sorry I didn't post anything yesterday. I was busy having dinner with a friend who is leaving the country to study in England. Anyhow, here I am again!

I hope you tried your very best with the quiz. I know it was hard, and long, and ahhhhhhhhh! Some of you did really well on the test (or what I have marked so far) and others of you had a bit of difficulty. Yes, I understand that you can all do better, but I do want to make sure that those who would be more successful in the Applied stream can start there as soon as possible. Like I said in class, if your math skills are weaker than they need to be, you'll have a lot of trouble this year, and you'll only end up not liking math in the end.

I will try my best to have the quiz marked for you tomorrow. Yes the mark will count towards your report card. I am guessing we will have about 10 quizzes and about 6 tests this term. Those will make up the majority of the 70% of your final mark.

Tomorrow, we will be continuing Ratios and Percents. And if the quiz is marked, we will take it up too.
