Don't forget your textbook tomorrow

Oh poor children! Have I given you too much homework? Yes? No? NOOOO!! I understand that grade 9 is a big change for you, but at the same time, you have to get used to the lifestyle and the studying/homework habits. If you can handle the workload now, you will be much better off next year and for the rest of your high school career.

The textbooks have been assigned, and that means that we will do less of the taking up homework on the daily basis. Why is that you ask? Well there are answers at the back of your textbook! Use your textbook well. Read the examples if you get confused, check the answers at the back of the textbook, BEFORE you ask me for help.

Okay... a summary of what we did today.
We started the class taking up the "Order of Operations" homework on Wednesday. We then took a note called "Algebraic Expressions, Variables and Exponents." A sheet was given for homework. The "collect like terms" side must be completed in full. On the other side, I want you to do all the questions, BUT, for questions 10 - 15, do only parts a, c, and e.

Tomorrow, we will be taking up the homework sheet and then doing some practice on exponents with partners. I will teach you a couple of exponent laws and then it's more seat work and practice for you, individually. You will need your textbooks EVERYDAY, so don't forget it tomorrow.

Good night, don't sleep too late tonight!

I apologise, but yes you do have to bring your textbook tomorrow. Hrm... but I do have a compromise... I'll tell you in class. Remind me!

I'll talk to the teacher in charge of the grade 9 math contests. When I get my hands on those, then I can put some contest papers in our room and you can do those questions, iff (that means if and only if) you have completed your other homework. Does that sound like a good deal. I can't, however, offer you extra marks on anything. Sorry to break it to you.

As for your question...
1953(8x2 + 2x + 1)
-------------------
72x3 + 28

I think....only spent a minute looking at it...

Hi all,

Dorthay.. Sorry for not responding earlier. I was at the staff social meeting after school and have been zonked out ever since. Meeting a bunch of new people all at once is tiring. Apart from wasting time in front of the tv, I've had a nap and had dinner.

Anyhow... as for your question...
Notice that the top of the section is called "Applications and Problem Solving." What Leo was explaining as best he could is correct. You're supposed to use trial and error or some other problem solving method to find the answer. Look at the numbers and "guess" possible bases that will give you the number you want. Or if you get lazy... grab a calculator and "play" with the numbers until you get the answer. In all honesty, there is no law or formula that will help you with p.29 #28. It's something that you just "know."

Urja, What I noticed when we were going around doing the first 30 questions out loud is that you guys often skip the question and go straight to the numbers. Like anything in life, the instructions are EXTREMELY important. However, in the case of "simplify" I do think the book is being a little bit vage. In a case like this, you can put BOTH answers down. I will take into account what you did and mark you accordingly.

Aly... read my next post and I'll tell you as much as I have planned out.
